Lux Aeterna: Class Archetypes

I need a break from designing and writing about player races, so I thought I'd talk about how I plan to emulate the character of the various jobs (or classes).

Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition already supports variation within the classes, so it would be very silly to simply go through and create a whole slew of classes from whole cloth.  Instead I think that most (if not all) of Final Fantasy-style class/jobs can be worked in as class archetypes (to use Pathfinder's term since D&D 5e does not seem to have a single term).  It'd keep things from getting overly complicated and be far easier to tweak for balance.  Granted, some of the jobs map to existing class archetypes.

My groupings for the class archetypes aren't comprehensive, but here they are.

  • Barbarian: Berserker, Foebreaker, Ravager
  • Bard: Dancer, Mime, Red Mage
  • Cleric: Time Mage, White Mage
  • Druid: Beastmaster, Geomancer
  • Fighter: Dragoon, Marauder, Mystic Knight, Samurai
  • Monk: Commando
  • Paladin: Dark Knight
  • Ranger: Archer, Blue Mage
  • Rogue: Gambler, Gunner, Ninja
  • Sorcerer: Black Mage
  • Warlock: Summoner
  • Wizard: Scholar, Synergist
