The World III: Denizens

And now a little bit about the denizens of the World.

The People

The People of the World are many and varied; ranging from the ubiquitous humans and the rarely seen dragonfolk to the industrious dvargr and the nature-loving ratkin.  They are all called people, because that is what the Old Titans called them when they were made.  Even artificially built species are counted among the People.

Most of the People sided with the True Gods because it was the best way to preserve themselves.  There were a few of the People who were loyal to the Old Titans, and those that still exist are known as the Forsaken.  They are distrusted for siding with the titans and the accompanying casual apocalyptic destruction those beings wrought.

(Long story short: Just about any fantasy race has a home here.  Use an appropriate Fact or two if your character's race matters to them.)

The Broken

Between the strange years of the Titanomachy and the Shattering, bizarre and potent energies were released.  With so many being warped by said energies, it was only inevitable that a few would become species of their own.  These are simply known as the Broken.  Broken People, Broken Animals, etc...

(Broken are based on the Lusae type of Relict.)

Demons

There was never an afterlife, even when Heaven was whole and working.  There was only reincarnation and now with the Orrery as broken as the World, the consequences became monstrous for the dead.  Demons are distinctly a post-Shattering phenomenon.  Dangerous for their supernatural gifts and manipulation of emotions, demons are typically dealt with by specialists of a mortuary guild.

(Demons always have one Greater Gift and at least one Lesser Gift.  They do not use Words, though.)

The Eldritch

King-priests, mage-kings, high sorcerers, lichs, fell warlocks.  They are all practitioners of the high magic known as theurgy that was handed down by the True Gods in order to make the Age of Miracles possible.  They are often long-lived and potent, knowing things about the workings of theurgy that lesser theurgic engineers would spend lifetimes to master.

Excrucians

Terrible and awesome beings from the Uncreated Night, they seek to destroy the shattered realms of the World, claiming that it is unnatural.  Notably, they have hands with four fingers and two thumbs.

(Add the abilities of Uncreated to Angels and you have Excrucians.)

Ghosts

Without the Celestial Orrery being complete and maintained, the souls of the living do not always leave the World to be cleansed and reincarnated.  When proper funerary rites cannot be performed in a timely manner (about a week or two after death), ghosts tend to arise and cause problems for the living.  Left to their own devices, the restless souls of the dead will become twisted and bloated with power, becoming demons.  In the wake of the Shattering, most realms have their own version of a mortuary guild to hunt ghosts and put them to rest.

The Greater Dragons

Of all the creations of the Old Titans, the Greater Dragons were second only to the Titanspawn.  A greater dragon is nearly a primordial expression of an element and mountainous in size.  Their lairs are often surrounded by wastelands and desolate places; often labeled as lacunae, desolations, or wastes.  The Lacunae of Pyre surrounds a volcano that is said to be the lair of a Greater Dragon; some stories claim the volcano is the Greater Dragon.

(Greater Dragons use gifts from the Earth, Fertility, Fire, Sea, and Sky Words.  They do not use the broader abilities of the Words.)
